About Our Treasure - 10 years later exhibition

(點圖看看十年前的我們 touch the image to see us 10 years ago)

In the winter of 2004, SoCO, with the support of KPMG and our volunteers, published Our Treasure, our first photography book showing 29 local children living in poverty and an Exhibition was held. This was an attempt to raise public awareness about the issue of poverty running through generations of the same families. This book touched many in our community and also raised government awareness about poverty in Hong Kong.

The poet Jia Dao says, "It takes ten years to sharpen a sword." Growing up in difficult circumstances, our children face a bumpy road and uncertain future. Nevertheless, with unquestioning love from their families and kind assistance from others, these children preserved their innocence and ambition to thrive, never complaining nor abandoning their sense of responsibility to family and society. Their future is uncertain, but their perseverance and strength deserve recognition. This reminds us of a line by poet Wang Bo, "Be strong in the face of adversity, never give up your ambitions and the sky is the limit."

Over the past decade, the children's parents epitomise an 'Below the Lion Rock' spirit, taking great pains to raise their beloved children, their treasures. Despite this admirable attitude, their challenges also reveal the inadequacies of current social policies. More needs to done to create a just and caring community - a community in which we would like our future generations to live in.

We are grateful to the children and their parents for their selfless sharing of personal experiences. It gives everyone an opportunity to see the less fortunate in our community and acknowledge some hard truths. We are also grateful to KPMG and our volunteer photographers, designers and mentors for their continuing support over the last decade. This caring flame will continue into the future and we look forward to passing the torch!

Society for Community Organization (SoCO)

SoCO is a registered non-profit making and non-governmental human rights organization for the underprivileged, founded in 1972.

SoCO's services assist cage and cubicle dwellers, the single elderly, new immigrant women, children living in poverty, street-sleepers, people with mental illnesses, low-paid workers, refugees and ethnic minorities. SoCO also undertakes original social policy research, lobbies Hong Kong decision-making bodies and organizes direct action events.

An Introduction to the Children's Rights Project

The gap between the rich and poor in Hong Kong is becoming ever wider and impoverished families are struggling to survive. The living standards of and development opportunities for children growing up in poverty are compromised. Despite the affluence of Hong Kong, there are nearly 300,000 children living in poverty. Of those, about 30,000 children live in extremely deprived conditions in cubicle homes, subdivided flats, and cage homes. They have to do their homework on their beds and earn money at night collecting discarded paper, cardboard boxes and tins for recycling. According to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, "each child has his or her own rights irrespective of the child's race, skin colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national, ethnic or social origin, property, disability, birth or other status". In the spirit of that convention, SoCO has focused on improving children's lives since 2003 through campaigning for better policies, organization, services and social participation.

Preface by Mr. Tung Chee-hwa, GBM

It is very rare that we have a project such as this one where we are able to follow the lives of 16 disadvantaged children in Hong Kong over a 10- year period. Thanks to SoCO for giving us the chance to have a front-row view of their indomitable spirit in confronting the challenges that they face.

With this rich diversity of stories, one thing rings true throughout - that the Hong Kong spirit is alive and well. In the midst of adversity, many of these courageous children and young adults have persevered, and pursued their dreams. Not only did they not feel sorry for themselves but they were also able to become more resourceful in preparing for their future: to study abroad, to dream of becoming a pilot or pastry chef, and so on.

We cannot ignore the fact that the wealth gap in Hong Kong has widened in the last 10 years, and making a living has become more difficult for those less fortunate in our society. However, we can also take heart in the fact that the different members of our community, through non-profit organisations such as SoCO, and local business organisations such as KPMG, are working hand in hand to support the dreams and aspirations of these courageous youngsters.

I thank every one of the children who contributed their stories. Thank you for giving us hope, and for showing us that it is not about what circumstances you are in, but how you face them that matters. I have no doubt that these stories will go on to inspire many others in Hong Kong.

Mr. Tung Chee-hwa, GBM

Foreword by KPMG

KPMG believes that the business sector has a distinct and vital role to play in creating synergies with community organisations, and in promoting public and private

initiatives to strengthen the common good for our society. By proactively encouraging all levels of staff to get involved, we can use our professional knowledge to empower and build the capacity of civil society. We aim to draw out the full potential of members in our community, which we think can be realised by rallying the whole business community to join forces and take on leadership roles to catalyse change. With our commitment to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals in mind, one of KPMG's corporate social responsibility focuses is to tackle extreme poverty and hunger by encouraging our staff, our business partners and society at large to combine their efforts.

It is hard to imagine that in a metropolis like Hong Kong, one-fifth of the population lives in poverty. The difficulties of the inner-city poor and transgenerational poor are of great concern to the development of our society. In light of the poverty issues in our community, in 2003 KPMG initiated a long-term partnership with the Society for Community Organization (SoCO), an organisation that shares our vision for addressing poverty issues.

One of KPMG's and SoCO's earlier collaborations was the publication of the Our Treasure photo book in 2004. The book told the stories of 29 underprivileged children and their families and described their hardships, thereby raising public awareness of the urban poor. 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of this publication, and once again, we would like to draw the public's attention to the importance of equal opportunity and how access to resources can change lives. This new book, Our Treasure II , follows up 16 of the 29 original featured stories. The book explores the past and present experiences of these underprivileged youths, and illustrates their extraordinary efforts and developments in striving to achieve their dreams.

The KPMG volunteers who spearheaded the editorial process of Our Treasure II noticed that these youths showed some common traits - the ability to overcome adversity, the determination to make change, gratitude to the community, a desire to give back to society and most notably, a sense of responsibility and love towards their families. These young men and women have demonstrated that despite their difficult upbringings, they are determined to excel and enjoy a bright future by being creative, resourceful and hard-working.

We are so proud of each one of them and are confident that their indomitable spirits will take them to great places.

"We need to distinguish between actual 'needs' and 'wants'. "

Audrey Ho

To be the first micro-shop landlord in Hong Kong

"I used a trolley to bring a pile of paper from my home to Sham Shui Po. The most unbearable part was enduring the stares from bystanders. Someone even made fun of me by calling me' the garbage woman'. "

Olivia Ho

On the starting line

"I am very realistic and I live a meaningful life. I am determined to make use of every opportunity to learn the most while spending the least. "

Elaine Ho

Words from Mum:

"There is nothing more difficult than taking care of three daughters: it makes me exhausted. There are no words that can adequately describe how hard it is. Hong Kong's society is materialistic. As a parent, I feel stressed when I cannot offer things which my daughters see others have. I have two wishes: first, I hope the three sisters have the chance to go to university when they grow up, although I know their chances could be slim. And second, I hope they become sensible people. If, one day, they truly understand my reasons for being strict with them in the past, then my hard work and sacrifice will be worth it."

Triumph in the sky

"As long as you persevere, miracles are waiting to happen in this wonderful world."

Audrey Lee

My family have been very poor. I studied hard and was very obedient, with the hope of getting into university to raise ourselves out of poverty. However, I faced many unexpected challenges once school started - my schoolmates were not friendly to new immigrants like me. With lots of hard work, I finally got into a band one secondary school, but then I found out I needed a computer to do homework. Mum and I came up with a 'plan', which was to have bread for most of our meals and buy the computer through monthly instalments.

I work 14 hours every day at both full-time and part-time jobs, saving until I finally have enough money to enrol in a cadet training programme in Quebec, Canada. I know this is not easy, but I am determined to give it my best. If I ultimately qualify as a pilot, not only will I have honoured my promise to Dad by realising my childhood dream of flying, but I will also be able to lift our family out of poverty and contribute to the community by helping others!

Words from Mum:

"Audrey has been an independent and strong-willed child from a very young age. I still remember her reply when I told her to be good at school. She said, "Mum, schoolwork is my responsibility, I must learn the material and no one can do it for me." Her determination was reflected in her grades, and I never had to worry about her."

移民 Immigration

"I was born in Hong Kong. However, people can easily tell that I'm Nepalese, so I'm treated as an immigrant instead of as a Hong Konger."

Bhowan Tamang

Words from Dad:

"I am proud of my son. He is very considerate. My wife and I have to work, so Bhowan often stays alone at home. He follows our instructions and studies hard. He plays card games and board games when at home, which allows us to focus on work without any worries."

Instant noodles or rice?

"Although my home is far away from school, I wake up earlier to walk to school and then walk home again which takes around 30 minutes each way. By doing so, I can save some money every week. "

Kelly Wong

Words from Mum:

"Watching Kelly grow up every day is a great delight. When she was young, she was a bit moody just like her dad, but now, as a secondary school student, she's becoming more mature in dealing with everything. In order to support the family, I work every day at a fast-food shop and have little time to spend with Kelly, which makes me feel sad. On weekends, she comes to the fast-food shop where I work. She just sits there and studies by herself for hours, waiting for me so that we can go home together. I have nothing to ask, except to hope that she remains healthy and becomes a valuable person in the future."

(點圖看看十年前的我們 touch the image to see us 10 years ago)
Let nature run its course

"The future is unknown and all I need to do is work hard and let nature run its course. Anything is possible!"

Ho Kam-pan

Words from Mum:

"Kam-pan has been a very obedient and independent child since he was young. He can manage every part of his life, from his studies to his daily routines. Since I work long hours at a restaurant, we don't spend much time together. Yet, I always try my best to get home to have dinner with him, and he always eagerly shares his life with me. Kam-pan's father passed away over two years ago. My only wish is that Kam-pan is not led astray. That in the future he will be able to find a job that he likes."

Painting my dream

"Everyone has dreams and aspirations. Dreams can motivate people to live their lives with hope and inspiration. I will not give up on my dreams although they may be tough to achieve."

Wong Man-lai

"10th floor, found some! …11th floor, none today…"

When I was 10, my daily chores included going up and down 15 floors looking for discarded newspapers and cardboard. Mum and I would then carry the large bundle of papers to sell every week. We didn't earn much, but it always gave me a great sense of satisfaction as I felt I was contributing to my family. At that time, Dad was diagnosed with kidney failure, so taking care of him became Mum's full-time job. Mum was exhausted and under great stress. To allow her more time to rest, I volunteered to share some of the responsibilities and took the midnight shift to handle Dad's dialysis. Life was tough, but I was preoccupied with many chores and time just passed by in the blink of an eye. Dad passed away several years ago.

Words from Mum:

"Teaching my son to have a moral responsibility has always been important to me and I am glad my son now has a good moral character. In the past, my only worry about him was his studies. Although he didn't get into university, he put my mind at ease by turning his interest in drawing into a career. He even enrolled himself into night school after work to keep improving himself."

"What I also hate is taking medicine. I have taken medicine every day since Primary Four. Now I have to take seven pills every day. I don't want to take them, but my mum and teachers insist that I must."

Lee Kam-shui

Words from Mum:

"Taking care of Kam Chai (Kam-shui's nickname) is harder than taking care of other children. His father passed away when he was one year old. When he was in Primary Two, the teacher said that he was unusually inattentive during class. He used to kick the classroom wall, turning it from white to grey. I took a social worker's advice and arranged for him to be assessed. Kam Chai was put on the waiting list for adolescent psychiatric services. It was more than two years before he was able to be assessed at the centre and receive treatment. This meant that he started treatment late, missing the best window for timely intervention. The doctor said Kam Chai has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and dyslexia. He has difficulties with his studies and it is difficult to teach him ... No matter how tiring and difficult it gets, I will raise him."

IT 路 The road to IT

"I want to apply my IT knowledge to help society. Just think about it, technology can strengthen connections between people and make people's lives more convenient. "

Alan Lam

I used to help my mum clear the trash and wash the stairs in old buildings after school. It was very tough work. My family's financial situation has improved since I started working. But my spending has also increased. I have to be very prudent with my spending. I am saving money to settle my current school fees, repay my student loan from the previous associate degree programme and support my parents' living expenses, as well as cover my daily spending. I also plan to save on transportation costs by riding a bicycle to work.

This year, I successfully found a job after applying for the position on my own. I am now working as a software developer at the Science Park. I am very happy and proud that I landed this job using my own abilities and did not need to rely on referrals. I want to apply my IT knowledge to help society. In fact, my company is currently developing a new software application to find ways for people to contribute to society with very little effort. Just think about it - technology can strengthen connections between people and make people's lives more convenient, especially for 'lazy' people like me.

Words from Mum:

"Ten years ago when Alan started secondary school, our family went through hard times. His dad lost his job due to illness, so I had to work. With the help of a social worker, I found work as a building cleaner. Alan also had to help clean the staircase and clear the rubbish bins after school, and this unfortunately took time from his studies, which we did not want. Now, as an adult, he is doing further studies while working. Our family's financial situation has improved and he now wants to develop his career in technology. As parents, we are gratified by his ambition. We expect nothing else from him provided he sets his goals and works hard to realise his short-term goals step by step."

"The ethnic minorities in Hong Kong must learn Chinese in order to survive."

Khem Limbu

Words from Dad:

"Our family works very hard to provide a good environment for Khem to grow up in. Life in Hong Kong isn't easy, but as long as you work hard, there are always opportunities here. And I try to teach him that. However, I don't think he's quite there yet and I wish he would try harder. I encourage him to participate in more volunteer work in his free time, help the community and broaden his views."

My memories of old Beijing

"I really want to pass on their love, to ignite the hope for other children and cultivate an environment where children can grow up with innocence."

Janet Yeung

Words from Mum:

"Once, we led a very difficult life - I could not even afford to buy milk powder for my daughter. But, fortunately, she is very sensible, never asks for anything, and I do not need to worry too much about her. I hope that with her hard work she can get into university. I am very grateful for the support from social workers, which helped us survive during the rough times. I often tell my daughter to learn from the social workers and to help other people."

A different childhood

"Looking back, it's not a bad thing that I have had a different childhood from others. After all, I have lived through all these experiences, and things would not change even if I had regrets."

Crocus Lan

Words from Mum:

"Crocus has always taken care of herself since she was young, and I never needed to worry about her studies as she always takes the initiative to do her homework and achieves quite good exam results. We are happy that our lives are simple; having a job and being able to enjoy meals at home are blessings enough for us. Crocus is always well behaved. She is very clear about what things are 'necessary' and those that are 'wanted'. I hope she will continue to be hard-working in her studies, go to university and be a valuable person."

Sugar art

"Life is like making sugar art; you have to be able to withstand the heat and work hard before you can enjoy the final product."

Tip-Hung Chu

I grew up in a 30-square foot cubicle flat with my family of four. It had no windows, nor a writing desk. There was barely enough room to breath, let alone do homework. That's why I always went to cyber caf?s. It only cost a few dollars anyway. I read many articles and came across lots of information and stories online, from which I gained inspiration and insight for my future.

Having a university degree does not guarantee success. Some university graduates are street sweepers. I once met a graduate from the University of Hong Kong in a cyber cafer. He tried very hard to find a job after he graduated, but still ended up as a street sweeper. This made me think twice about the value of a university degree. I believe that as long as I have skills, I can still survive in this society. As my academic results were really poor, I decided to quit school and started working towards becoming a confectioner.

Words from Dad:

He has his own beliefs on how to live his life, and I let him do what he wants. The most important thing is that he doesn't give up when difficulties arise. He always comes home late, and I rarely see him. Everybody is busy. I truly wish he achieves what he sets out to do.

I am a lucky person

"In order to save money, my brother and I did everything at SoCO's Centre on Kweilin Street."

Chan Wan-ling

A life of toil

"I couldn't help but wonder why there is such a big difference even though we all live under the same sky."

Chan Wan-chung

Words from Mum:

"Wan-chung worries me more than his sister does - he quit school after Form 4, and since then, still hasn't been able to find a permanent job. His heart is in the right place and he keeps applying himself to whatever work he can find, but I really hope he can find something more stable. Wan-ling (Wan-chung's sister) is currently studying at university. I hope both can make it and lessen my worries in the future."

We are guilty
of many errors and many faults,
but our worst crime
is abandoning the children,
neglecting the foundation of life.
Many of the things we need
can wait.
The child cannot.
Right now is the time
his bones are being formed,
his blood is being made and
his senses are being developed.
To him, we cannot answer, 'Tomorrow'.
His name is 'Today'.
